In previous Wise Crypto Life editions, we discussed how blockchain technology is being used in various fields such as real estate, art, and sports.

Nonetheless, NFT auctions still sound like far-fetched futuristic concepts as blockchain-based games and activities are banned in Korea as of now. In this episode of Wise Crypto Life, we will explore the “Vaccine Passport” that many of us are already familiar with and use.

Smart Vaccine App

Even if you haven’t been vaccinated yet, you have probably encountered the term “Vaccine Passport’’ when making an appointment. Also called the “Vaccine Certificate”, this serves as digital proof to verify when and which vaccine someone received. It also has additional functions such as viewing vaccine reservation history, preliminary checklists, and checking whether others have been vaccinated.

Incorporating Blockchain

Vaccine certificates incorporate blockchain-based DID (Distributed Identity) because in critical times like the COVID-19 crisis, it is necessary to avoid falsifications and duplications for the health of the masses. It was revealed in the beginning of the year that fake vaccine certificates were being produced and sold on the dark web. Having unforgeable certificates not only serve as digital proofs, but also help prevent misuse of personal information as the correct and reliable information can be viewed with the ease of a QR scan.

A real “Vaccine Passport”

Although it is often called a vaccine passport, it should be noted that it does not actually function as a passport yet. However, with recent discussions on international standard procedures, it could really serve as a passport in the near future.

Many countries and the WHO agree that blockchain technology should be used for clear identification and accurate vaccination viewing. At the ‘Online Workshop on Digital Vaccination Certificates’ held last month, many experts from abroad showed interest in Korea’s vaccination certificates and praised them for their safety and compatibility. Korea is now expected to lead the vaccine passport development as it was the first country to incorporate it nationally. Of course, there are still challenges to overcome for global utilization, but this is a strong first step to reopening the roads to travel and normal life as we knew it.
